Lessons From the Industry’s Best, Group Benefits and Progression Opportunities: This Elevated Taphouse Is Offering Employees the Full Package

The best part? They’re hiring the opening team now.

When hospitality professionals are looking for work, there are aspects that make certain jobs stand out in a crowd. It might be the opportunity to learn from some of the best industry experts in their field, or the chance to help open a new venue. It might be the prospect of joining a large group that offers job security and progression. Maybe the venue is an exciting concept in a great location.

Having one of these elements makes a job appealing, but it’s rare that they’d all apply to one venue. The team at Amphlett House is the exception to the rule. The best part? They’re hiring now and opening in October.

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s Little Bourke Street, the 120-seat taphouse will see exceptional drinks and elevated pub classics come together in an approachable environment. The CBD space was designed by Luchetti Krelle’s Rachel Luchetti, who makes the venue sophisticated without being intimidating – creating a comfortable atmosphere to both dine in and work in.

“We relished the challenge of creating a sophisticated and stylish space that gives a nod to the building’s ‘80s era,” Luchetti says. “Memphis nostalgia was a perfect fit for this project, and we interpreted this by injecting colour and energy.”

The considered concept and location gives potential employees an awesome environment to work in (who doesn’t love a brand new kitchen?), as well as the rare opportunity to join the opening team and launch a venue from day one. The learning curve for new restaurants can be steep, but some of Australian hospitality’s finest are behind Amphlett House.

The beverage team will have the chance to learn from parent group Ovolo’s Creative Beverage Director Andrea Gualdi, who has some serious bartending chops. Gualdi was one of the names behind Maybe Sammy – a bar that won Best Bar in Australasia in 2020 and 2021. He’s also won multiple individual awards, including Top 10 International Bartender of the Year in 2020 and the Australian World Class winner in 2017.

Gualdi says his focus will be on teaching the team to make quality drinks and giving them the opportunity to build their network with suppliers.

“Our aim is to bring the same level of quality you’d find in Australia’s best bars to the drinks offering at Amphlett House,” he says. “We’re lucky to have access to some incredibly progressive Australian and international producers, both in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic categories.”

The experience extends into the kitchen, where celebrated Melbourne chef Ian Curley (Kirk’s Wine Bar, Lona Misa) will impart years of knowledge onto the team. Despite his extensive experience in kitchens, Curley’s focus is on making the menu approachable and passing on lessons to staff members at any career stage.

“The food concept for Amphlett House will be elevated pub dining, with a menu highlighting quality Victorian produce,” he says. “There’s nothing pretentious happening here – we’re welcoming people to share a meal with family and friends or grab a quick bite with their better half.”

On top of the learning opportunities, potential employees will have access to all the benefits of working at Ovolo, the hospitality group behind the venue. Ovolo has a strong focus on internal training and progression, as well as opportunities to work across different venues around the country – or even around the world.

If you like what you’re reading, you’re in luck. Amphlett House is currently hiring its opening team, and they’re after people of all levels, ranging from venue management to kitchen team members, bartenders and a front-of-house crew.
