Five of the Best Indoor Plants For Your Office

Petite Green’s Amy Wong guides us through it.

THE TREE LOVER

If you’re looking for a great decorative climber, the Tree Lover is your go-to office plant. Commonly known as the “tree lover”, this Caribbean native can produce spectacular red, white or pink inflorescences [blossoms]. They can either be trained to grow on moss-covered poles or stakes, or can hang from baskets and ceramic pots. Tree lovers are best grown in bright filtered light.

THE PEACE LILY

The peace lily (below) is one of the most popular office plants for good reason. The white flowers that blossom from this evergreen plant are stunning. Place one of these on your front desk and you’ll have an instant conversation starter. And of all the flowering office plants, the peace lily is one of the easiest to manage. Just make sure you don't overwatering the plant with too much water because it may rot.

THE TRIOSTAR STROMANTHE

Looking to create some office terrariums? We suggest sourcing some triostar plants. They thrive in a moist environment, so the close confines of a glassed habitat make it an ideal living space. Triostar plants have beautiful oval leaves marked with a distinguishable herringbone pattern, and may sprout beautiful reddish-orange flowers in the spring. Like most indoor plants, they require filtered light because they can get sunburnt.

FRUIT SALAD PLANT

If you have a large foyer or staff room that needs filling, consider the monstera, or fruit salad plant (below) as it is commonly referred to. This Central American native, characterised by its active aerial roots, will grow into a fruit-bearing ornamental giant. In terms of maintenance, ensure any exterior doors nearby are kept closed in the winter months and that they’re positioned away from direct sunlight. Fruit salad plants prefer moist, warm situations and grow more rapidly in well-drained soil rich in organic matte.

THE DRAGON TREE

Consider the air-cleansing dragon tree. Place these around the office and they will remove some of the benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene from the air. Dragon trees are recognised by their striking, variegated foliage, and are another easy-to-manage species. Just make sure they are kept away from any office pets, though. They can be toxic to small cats and dogs!
