Quick Tips: Getting A Job In The Hospitality Industry

Hotelstaff’s Nathan Szprinc shares his tips on how to break into the business.

Hotelstaff is a leading Melbourne-based hospitality recruiter for restaurants, catering companies, event organisers and similar businesses worldwide. Managing director Nathan Szprinc offers his advice on how to get a job in the industry.

Tailor your application

We always look for applications that show us the job seeker understands the role they’re applying for. When you note your career highlights in your cover letter, make sure they relate to the advertised role. This shows potential employers that you’ve taken the time in applying and not just passed off a generic template.

In terms of your resume, keep this to a few pages. At a minimum, each role should show job title, length of service and any promotions earned.

Only enquire outside peak hours

If you’re using the “walk-in” method to enquire or apply for a job, make sure you pick a quiet time. Walking into a busy restaurant during service will show a lack of industry understanding and could affect your chances of employment. When you do, arrive in a presentable fashion and bring a well-written CV.

Note: Not all businesses are equipped to handle walk-ins. Some will advise to apply through traditional means so that all applications can be stacked against each other.

Follow up applications (within reason)

After you’ve applied, follow up with a call or email to show them you are keen. It’s important though not to become a pest. Keep the communication open, and if possible, try to get an understanding of the timeframes so that your expectations are aligned with the person running the process.

Prioritise culture and values during the interview

In terms of questions to ask during an interview, queries around salary, perks and incentives should all be second to those concerned with understanding the role, the company, the team, the culture and career prospects. Make sure all of these components are aligned with your values and then negotiate on the former.

Keep active on LinkedIn

Hospitality professionals are active on LinkedIn. So you need to take the time to create a professional online profile and ensure it’s always kept current with any accomplishments or changes in employment. Also read the posts written by your industry peers, and exchange ideas and dialogue on subjects that interest you. Engage, engage, engage.

For more information on Hotelstaff visit the company website.
