How Coffee Orders Differ Across Australia

Was that a small?

The latest Square Australian Coffee Report has revealed some fascinating data on Australia’s coffee drinking habits, from order preferences to drinking times and prices.

According to the report, lattes are Australia’s go-to coffee option, making up 43 per cent of total cups sold across the country, and the most popular espresso-based drink in the Northern Territory, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Flat whites take second place, making up 20 per cent of total coffees sold Australia-wide, and are the most popular coffee type in NSW and WA.

Interestingly, the peak times for coffee purchases differ between our two biggest cities. Sydney coffee drinkers generally get their coffee fix around 8am, while Melbournians, on average, head out for theirs 90 minutes later at 9.30am.

In terms of price, the national average for a small latte is $3.84. Tasmania has, on average, the cheapest coffee at $3.48 a cup, while the Northern Territory ($4.11) has the most expensive.

In Melbourne, coffee is cheapest in Port Melbourne ($3.81) and most expensive in Prahran and North Melbourne (both $4.50).

The report has also found that 80.7 per cent of customers order the smallest coffee option.
