Lead our finance function at one of Australia's most loved independent bookshops.
We're looking for a Finance Manager to lead our finance function at Readings.
The role
Day to day, you'll lead the finance team and set the tone for how the function operates, with responsibility for our accounting and reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and internal governance controls.
You'll track our financial performance against targets, get ahead of anything that's drifting off course, and make sure our internal controls are solid enough to protect the integrity of the numbers. You'll keep us compliant across BAS, GST, payroll and ATO obligations, manage cash flow, and turn financial data into insights that help non-finance people make good decisions — including supporting the shop manager team to understand and manage their own budgets.
You'll liaise with our external accountants, auditors, and bank, and be the person across the business people come to with finance questions, whether that's a shop-level query or Board reporting. And you'll always be looking at ways to automate, communicate, and collaborate to make our finance processes easier and more streamlined.
This is an in-person role, based in West Melbourne with flexibility for hybrid work. It can be a full-time or part-time opportunity, working 4-5 days a week.
Your experience and approach to work
You have solid experience running a finance function or in a senior finance role, ideally somewhere with multiple entities. You're comfortable owning the full cycle, from compliance through to monthly reporting and Board-level insight. You read financial data easily, and you can spot the thing that doesn't look right. You can explain a number to someone who doesn't live in spreadsheets, and you do it with patience.
You'll hold a relevant Bachelor's degree along with a CPA or CA qualification. You're flexible and adaptable, with a continuous improvement mindset – always looking for ways to make things clearer and better for the business. You're communicative and collaborative, happy to share reports and data to help Readings make better decisions.
Readings is one of Australia's most loved independent bookshops, and our finance team plays a quiet but important role in keeping the whole operation running smoothly. Our main office is in West Melbourne, servicing our shops across Carlton, Chadstone, St Kilda, Emporium, Malvern, Hawthorn, Doncaster, and State Library Victoria.
As part of the team, you'll enjoy generous discounts on our products, a supportive and passionate team culture, and a company that genuinely cares about its impact on people and community.
