We're looking for an Apprentice Chef who shares our dedication to excellence, teamwork, and culinary creativity to join the Tonka team.

Tonka is a vibrant and innovative one hat restaurant in Melbourne, known for a modern Indian menu that embraces the influence of other global cuisines to create unique, bold dishes. Our team is passionate about delivering high-quality food that combines diverse flavours and modern techniques to highlight the quality of Australian produce.

The Role:
As an Apprentice Chef at Tonka, you are an integral member of our culinary team. You will work closely with our experienced chefs, contributing to the preparation and presentation of exquisite dishes. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in a fast-paced, professional environment while working towards becoming a qualified chef.

Key Responsibilities:
* Assist in the preparation and cooking of dishes according to established recipes and guidelines.
* Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure dishes are plated to the highest standards, paying attention to presentation and portion sizes.
* Learn and practice a variety of cooking techniques under the guidance of senior chefs.
* Prepare ingredients by chopping, peeling, marinating, and seasoning, ensuring consistency and precision.
* Handle and store food items safely, adhering to strict food safety and hygiene regulations.
* Contribute to the overall organization and cleanliness of the kitchen, including regular equipment maintenance and cleaning.
* Assist in the creation of menu items, specials, and seasonal dishes, showcasing creativity and attention to detail.
* Collaborate with the kitchen team to refine and improve existing recipes, maintaining the restaurant's culinary standards.
* Embrace opportunities for continuous learning and improvement, attending training sessions and seeking feedback from senior chefs.
* Take initiative to expand your culinary knowledge and skills through personal research and exploration.
* Foster a positive and professional working environment by communicating effectively and collaborating with colleagues.
* Support fellow team members in executing their tasks, promoting a seamless and efficient workflow.


We’re looking for someone who has:
* Demonstrated passion for the culinary arts and a genuine love for cooking.
* A desire to pursue a successful career in the hospitality industry.
* Enrolled or completed a recognised culinary apprenticeship program or equivalent culinary education.
* Proficient knife skills and a basic understanding of kitchen tools and cooking techniques.
* Meticulous attention to detail in following recipes, plating dishes, and maintaining kitchen cleanliness.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment, standing for extended periods and lifting heavy objects.
* Flexibility to work in different sections of the kitchen, adjusting to changing priorities and demands.
* Excellent teamwork and communication skills, collaborating effectively with colleagues in a professional manner.
* Understanding of food safety regulations and adherence to strict hygiene practices.
* Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
