Junior Production/Roastery Assistant

Full-time (Monday-Friday) | Port Melbourne

$55-$60k + Superannuation

Since 2018 Criteria Coffee has supplied high-quality coffee to cafés and hospitality businesses, with a focus on consistency, transparency, and knowledge sharing.

Founded by Craig Simon, a multi-award-winning coffee professional, Criteria was built to be more than just a coffee supplier. Alongside Criteria’s own roasting and production sits our busy co-roasting and education facility, supporting a vibrant community of coffee brands and individuals.

Our roastery runs on clear processes and shared responsibility. A small collaborative team everyone gets involved in the day-to-day work — roasting, packing, cleaning, and maintaining a safe, organised space. We value reliability, focus, and people who understand that good systems and steady effort matter.

Start your career in coffee roasting!

In this newly created role, we’re looking for a Production/Roastery Assistant to join our team. This is a junior, hands-on role designed for someone early in their coffee or production career, or someone keen to transition into specialty coffee roasting. Prior roastery experience isn’t essential but is advantageous.  Full training will be provided, you just need to bring your curiosity, reliability, and a willingness to learn and support the roastery operations.

This role is central to the day-to-day running of the site with well-structured production and cleaning routines, with a great opportunity to learn from proven industry professionals.

What your day will look like?

Working closely with the production team, you’ll assist in the entire coffee production process — from green coffee preparation through to roasted coffee packing and dispatch. Your days will be active, practical, and varied, with a strong focus on consistency, cleanliness, and teamwork. During our rostered co-roasting days, you’ll help with the smooth running of the facility reporting into the Roastery Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily production roasting, including preparing green coffee.
  • Pack and label roasted coffee accurately and efficiently
  • Support order fulfilment and preparation for dispatch
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe roastery environment
  • Carry out daily cleaning of roasting equipment and working areas (including wet bar) and toilets.
  • Assist with basic equipment care and light maintenance tasks as required
  • Receive, move, and store green and roasted coffee correctly.
  • Follow all food safety, quality, and workplace safety procedures
  • Work closely with the wider team to meet daily and weekly production goals

About You

  • Keen interested in specialty coffee and how it’s made
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working as part of a small team
  • Able to follow processes while remaining attentive and adaptable
  • Calm under pressure and open to feedback
  • Comfortable with physically active work as part of your day
  • Able to safely lift and move bulky items including coffee and packing materials, with appropriate training and support
  • Previous coffee service, hospitality, warehouse, or coffee roasting experience highly regarded.
